EFFECT OF COMPUTER-ASSISTED INSTRUCTION ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS

Abstract

The study examined the influence computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) in collaboration with traditional teaching method would have on male and female secondary students’ mathematics achievement. A stratified random sample of 80 students made up equal number of boys and girls were divided into two groups the experimental and control groups each comprising of 20 boy and 20 girls, was investigated. The two were taught mathematics for ten weeks using conventional instruction for the control group and supplement of CAI programmed packages for the experimental group. Pre-test and Post-test were administered to them before and after the experiment to determine difference in achievement if any, between the two groups and between gender the experiment group. After data analysis using means, simple percentages, t-test, the findings showed that: (i) CAI produced higher mathematics achievement in students than the conventional instructor; (ii) with CAI, boys performed better. It was recommended among others that Government should make provision for the introduction, implementation and finding of CAI in mathematics in Nigerian schools to boost the current achievement in mathematics.
